BMS World Mission

Lawyers teams

BMS World Mission, in partnership with the UK-based Lawyers' Christian Fellowship (LCF), is looking for law students and young lawyers with a passion for justice to broaden their practical understanding of God's heart for mission through advocacy. Team members will gain experience by assisting and working alongside projects in Africa that aim to advise, advocate and provide justice for everyone, regardless of age, background or status.

Dates: 5 weeks from mid June 2010

Cost: Approx £1,800* per person

Team size: 8-10 people

In 2009, the BMS LCF team visited and served at legal projects in Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya. We anticipate a similar programme for 2010.

Uganda & Rwanda: The team assisted the Ugandan Christian Lawyers' Fraternity (UCLF), where BMS personnel Steve and Caroline Sanderson and Matthew Price work. UCLF plays an important role in society, speaking out on behalf of the marginalised and oppressed. The team met with Ugandan lawyers, student lawyers, assisted in case studies, undertook prison ministry and visited institutions in order to gain an understanding of the issues concerned.  Steve and Caroline are also involved in exploring links and opportunities in Rwanda and other areas of the Great Lakes region, with a view to extending work similar to that of UCLF.

Kenya: Finally, the team spent two weeks in Kenya, hosted by Christian Legal Education Aid and Research (CLEAR), LCF's international partners in Nairobi. CLEAR operates two legal advice centres, in Nairobi and Mombasa. Cases are referred from these centres to members of the Kenya Christian Lawyers' Fellowship (KCLF), who give their time to provide legal advice and representation on a voluntary basis. The project focused primarily on criminal, family and public law cases.

The programme for 2010 will be similarly full-on and not for the faint-hearted. The Lawyers' Justice Team programme involves significant amounts of travelling but promises to be challenging, inspiring and rewarding.

"The six weeks in Africa were a life-changing experience. I have been challenged in so many ways that I will not be able to continue living as I did before… my life, my attitudes and my priorities have been substantially shaken up. Go!
